Bilipschitz Embeddings of Metric Spaces into Euclidean Spaces

When does a metric space admit a bilipschitz embedding into some finite-dimensional Euclidean space? There does not seem to be a simple answer to this question. Results of Assouad [A1], [A2], [A3] do provide a simple answer if one permits some small (“snowflake”) deformations of the metric, but unfortunately these deformations immediately disrupt some basic aspects of geometry and analysis, lik...

Euclidean Quotients of Finite Metric Spaces

This paper is devoted to the study of quotients of finite metric spaces. The basic type of question we ask is: Given a finite metric space M and α ≥ 1, what is the largest quotient of (a subset of) M which well embeds into Hilbert space. We obtain asymptotically tight bounds for these questions, and prove that they exhibit phase transitions. We also study the analogous problem for embedings int...

Embeddings of Locally Finite Metric Spaces into Banach Spaces

We show that if X is a Banach space without cotype, then every locally finite metric space embeds metrically into X.

Metric Transforms and Euclidean Embeddings

It is proved that if 0 < c < 0.72/« then for any «-point metric space (X, d), the metric space (X,dc) is isometrically embeddable into a Euclidean space. For 6-point metric space, c = j log2 | is the largest exponent that guarantees the existence of isometric embeddings into a Euclidean space. Such largest exponent is also determined for all «-point graphs with "truncated distance".

8 Low-distortion Embeddings of Finite Metric Spaces

An n-point metric space (X,D) can be represented by an n × n table specifying the distances. Such tables arise in many diverse areas. For example, consider the following scenario in microbiology: X is a collection of bacterial strains, and for every two strains, one is given their dissimilarity (computed, say, by comparing their DNA). It is difficult to see any structure in a large table of num...
